Activity 3.1.1: Art Timeline Creation

• Create a timeline of art periods from prehistoric to contemporary art. Include at least two significant artworks and a brief description for each period.

🎨 Art Timeline: From Prehistoric to Today


1. Prehistoric Art (about 40,000 – 2,000 BCE)

Examples:

Lascaux Cave Paintings – Animal drawings found in caves in France.

Venus of Willendorf – A small statue showing a woman, thought to represent fertility.

Description:

This is the oldest kind of art. People made cave drawings, carvings, and small statues. Art was used in hunting, rituals, and daily life.



2. Ancient Art (about 3,000 BCE – 400 CE)

Examples:

Bust of Nefertiti – A statue of an Egyptian queen, showing beauty and power.

Parthenon Sculptures – Carvings from a Greek temple showing gods and heroes.

Description:

Art in this time came from places like Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It showed gods, kings, and daily life using strong shapes and symbols.



3. Medieval Art (about 400 – 1400 CE)

Examples:

Book of Kells – A colorful book with drawings of Bible stories.

Stained Glass Windows from Chartres Cathedral – Windows showing scenes from the Bible.

Description:

Most art was made for the Church. It taught people about religion and was found in books and churches.



4. Renaissance Art (about 1400 – 1600 CE)

Examples:

The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci – A painting of Jesus and his disciples.

The Birth of Venus by Botticelli – A painting of the goddess Venus rising from the sea.

Description:

Art became more realistic and focused on people and nature. Artists studied the human body and used perspective to show depth.



5. Baroque Art (about 1600 – 1750 CE)

Examples:

The Night Watch by Rembrandt – A large painting of soldiers ready to march.

The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Bernini – A sculpture showing deep emotion.

Description:

Baroque art was dramatic and full of movement. It often showed strong feelings and told religious stories.



6. Neoclassicism & Romanticism (about 1750 – 1850 CE)

Examples:

The Oath of the Horatii by David – A painting about loyalty and bravery.

Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix – A painting showing people fighting for freedom.

Description:

Neoclassicism used clean lines and old Roman styles. Romanticism was more emotional, showing nature, heroes, and freedom.



7. Modern Art (about 1850 – 1970 CE)

Examples:

Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh – A colorful night sky full of swirling stars.

Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Picasso – A painting that broke the rules of how faces and bodies were shown.

Description:

Artists started trying new ideas. They used bright colors, unusual shapes, and showed feelings or dreams.



8. Contemporary Art (1970 – today)

Examples:

Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons – A shiny sculpture that looks like a balloon animal.

Shark in a Tank by Damien Hirst – A real shark in a glass tank, making people think about life and death.

Description:

This is today’s art. It uses all kinds of materials and ideas. It talks about modern life, identity, technology, and more.
